What is coworking and does it suit your way of working?

What is coworking?

Coworking is a way of working where you share a desk or workspace with other entrepreneurs and professionals. You work in an office environment that is not exclusively yours. You do not rent your own office, but join an existing workspace where you can work at fixed or varying times. Coworking is often mentioned in the same breath as flexible working, but there is a difference. With coworking, you usually rent a spot within the same community for a longer period. Flexible working, on the other hand, works by the day or by the hour, without a fixed tie to one location.

Who is coworking interesting for?

Coworking is particularly suitable for the following situations.

  • Self-employed professionals and freelancers who miss the social and business environment of an office when working from home.
  • Small teams that are not yet ready for their own office space, but do want to collaborate structurally in one place.
  • Companies expanding to a new city that want to experience how they like the location before entering into a long-term lease.
  • Professionals who need a network of other entrepreneurs with whom collaboration or new clients can arise.

Coworking versus a private office

A private office gives you full control over the layout and complete privacy. However, this comes with a longer financial commitment and more responsibility for maintenance and facilities. Coworking reverses this dynamic. You get a fully furnished, serviced workspace without having to take care of furniture, cleaning, or technical facilities yourself. In return, there is slightly less privacy in a shared environment. For companies that want to be able to scale up or down quickly, coworking is therefore often more flexible than a long-term lease for private office space

For which professions is coworking suitable?

Coworking is not suited to one type of professional. It is precisely the mix of different professions that makes a coworking space valuable. Nevertheless, there are a few groups that benefit from it the most.

Self-employed professionals and freelancers:
Do you work alone from home? Then you quickly miss the contact with other professionals. At a coworking space, you work among entrepreneurs with a similar rhythm. You build your network without having to make a separate effort.

Consultants and Advisors
Consultants often work at varying locations, close to their clients. A fixed coworking space provides stability between client visits. You always have a professional workspace within reach, even if you do not rent a permanent office yourself.

Developers, designers, and other creative professionals
: For focused work on code or design, peace and quiet are important. However, this type of work often works better with occasional outside inspiration. Coworking gives you both. You sit among other makers, but retain the space to do your own thing.

Sales professionals and account managers:
Do you travel frequently to clients? Then a fixed workspace can sometimes be difficult to schedule. With coworking, you log in at the location that suits you best at that moment. You simply continue working between appointments, without having to return to a fixed office.

Small teams and startups.
Don't have your own office yet, but ready for a shared workspace? Then coworking is a logical first step. You pay for what you need, without a long-term lease. Is your team growing? Then you can easily scale up to multiple workspaces or a dedicated desk.

What should you look for when choosing a coworking space?

Not every coworking space is the same, and the right choice depends on how you work.

  • Accessibility: choose a location that is easy to reach for you and potential clients, so that the barrier to visiting remains low.
  • Atmosphere and type of community: a space full of creative freelancers feels different from a space with mainly business service providers. That partly determines whether you feel at home there.
  • Membership flexibility: can you pay per day, or are you tied to a longer contract that does not fit a changing schedule?.
  • Additional amenities: the ability to quickly book a meeting room or day office is valuable as soon as you receive clients or work with a team.

By having these points clear in advance, you avoid choosing based on price alone and later discovering that the location does not align with your way of working.

Pros and cons of coworking

Coworking is not the best choice for everyone. An honest overview of the benefits and points to consider helps you make an informed decision.

Benefits of coworking:
You rent by the day, week, or month, without a long-term lease. You share amenities such as internet, printers, and a reception with others, instead of having to arrange and pay for them yourself. You work among other professionals and entrepreneurs, which leads to new contacts and fresh ideas. Maintenance, cleaning, and technical matters are already taken care of. And you receive clients in a well-maintained, professional environment, even without your own office.

Disadvantages of coworking:
You share the space with others. This can beleiden during focused work or a confidential conversation. Furthermore, at a standard coworking space, you do not work in exactly the same spot every day. You also have less control over the layout than in a private office. And during busy periods, it may be necessary to consider the availability of a spot.
